GAYLETTER

Branding + Editorial

About Gayletter

Gayletter is a popular online and print publication that covers various aspects of queer life and culture, including art, fashion, travel, nightlife, and politics. Through an image heavy and minimalistic design, the brand serves to uplift LGBTQ+ artists and showcase a diverse range of perspectives. Gayletter offers a tender and meaningful look into the lives of artists shaping queer culture for future generations.

The Project

In acting as lead designer for Gayletter's upcoming issue, I conducted a comprehensive brand and design system analysis to produce a thematically cohesive and visually captivating publication that aligns with Gayletter’s distinct identity. Creating for such a meticulously crafted editorial magazine required me to carefully fine-tune even the smallest design details to ensure seamless visual consistency and honour the magazine’s overall vision

  • Type rules (font families, type pairs, sizing, leading, justification, hyphenation)

  • Image selection (editorial treatment, placement, sizing, relationship with text and other images)

  • Cover (primary, secondary, tertiary elements)

  • Frame and Format (dimensions, margins, grid)

  • Editorial specific treatments (slug, dek, headline, byline, body, credit, captions, folios)

Form + Structure

Paying special attention grid, typography, and image treatment, I made some interesting discoveries about Gayletter, specifically their structured, organized, boxy approach to editorial design. Paragraphs are left justified, split into two or three columns and stack nicely beside big, bold images that take up most of the page. Images feel both in the now but nostalgic and tender, like you're seeing the softer, creative underbelly of the artists being featured.
